Absence Makes the Thought Grow Stronger: Reducing Structural Overlap Can Increase Inductive Strength

چکیده
Computational models of analogy have assumed that the strength of an inductive inference about the target is based directly on similarity of the analogs, and in particular on shared higher-order relations. However, in Experiment 1 we show that reducing analogical overlap by eliminating a higher-order causal relation (a preventive cause present in the source) from the target increased inductive strength even though it decreased similarity of the analogs. In Experiment 2 we extend these findings to cross-domain analogical inferences based on correspondences between higher-order causal relations. Analogical inference appears to be mediated by building and then “running” a causal model. We discuss the implications of the present findings for theories of both analogy and causal inference.

Surprise and change: variations in the strength of present and absent cues in causal learning.
It is said that "absence makes the heart grow fonder." But, when and why does an absent event become salient to the heart or to the brain? An absent event may become salient when its nonoccurrence is surprising. Van Hamme and Wasserman (1994) found that a nonpresented but expected stimulus can actually change its associative status-and in the opposite direction from a presented stimulus. Associ...
متن کاملPoster: Waiting Makes the Heart Grow Fonder and the Password Grow Stronger Experiments in Nudging Users to Create Stronger Passwords
Despite passwords’ long history and present ubiquity, the general population exhibits password habits that are widely regarded as poor. Reuse is rampant, and users consistently choose weak (i.e., easy to crack) passwords, which is especially dangerous in light of increasingly sophisticated attack methodologies and exponentially faster modern hardware. This paper contributes the design and evalu...
متن کاملComputer Security Strength & Risk : A Quantitative Approach
When attacking a software system is only as difficult as it is to obtain a vulnerability to exploit, the security strength of that system is equivalent to the market price of such a vulnerability. In this dissertation I show how security strength can be measured using market means, how these strength measures can be applied to create models that forecast the security risk facing a system, and h...
متن کاملMicrostructural differences in the reinforcement of a gastropod shell against predation
Gastropod shells are important antipredator structures that vary morphologically in response to predation risk, often increasing in thickness when the risk of predation is greater. Because the shell is composed of different microstructures that vary in energetic cost and strength, shell thickness may be increased in different ways. We tested whether the common intertidal snail Nucella lapillus ...
متن کاملState-Owned Enterprises and Corporate Governance Strength: Evidence from Indonesia
Background: This study investigates whether state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in Indonesia implement stronger corporate governance than do non-SOEs. It can be argued that as a large dedicated institutional investor, the Indonesian government has an incentive to strengthen corporate governance in SOEs and possesses the ability to bear the cost of implementing stronger governance. Research Methods: ...
